Respite Information

Respite care is temporary relief care designed for families of children connected to the child welfare system or primary families who face serious problems and stress as a result of balancing the needs of their child with the needs of other family members.

Without a temporary break, some families may find the issues in their homes escalating to disruption or episodes of abuse and/or neglect with long lasting consequences for not only the child, but also for our communities.

Respite care is designed to help families by averting disruption or potential abuse/neglect episodes and allowing caretakers time to tend to the needs of their children, spouses, and themselves.

Respite care can range from a few hours of care provided on a one-time basis to overnight or extended care sessions. Respite care can be utilized on a regular or irregular basis and can be provided by family members, friends, skilled care providers or professionals.

OFCA encourages the development of resources for respite care including ways to recruit and retain compassionate providers and funds to develop system programs.
